Most vets don't know a lot about nutrition, so they aren't the best source to go to. Super premium dog food should contain a minimum of grains (no corn wheat or barley), and have quality protein as the first ingredient (hopefully more than one source). THe protein should be listed in a dried form (like meal), some companies list it as meat and don't tell you that is the weight with water, *before* processing. Once the water is gone, the meat would actually fall far down the ingredient list.
My own dogs get a combination of raw food and a super premium kibble. Here is a comprehensive comparison chart for foods.

By feeding them a raw diet.

There is another diet option other than dog food. Some people choose to feed a raw diet. This involves feeding the dog raw meaty bones and organ meat. However it is not as simple as throwing a couple chicken bones in a bowl everyday. If you wish to feed this type of diet, do lots and lots of research first. Switching to this diet without knowing what your doing can lead to nutritional problems for your dog. I'll give you some links as a starting point in research if you are interested in this type of diet.

The only difference is my dogs rarely get whole prey items, instead they get their "prey" in the form of frankenprey. Meat items combined to come close to whole prey. Whole prey all the time isn't exactly in my budget. But they do great with and love their frankenprey.

I`m not a vet, but I can tell u what my vet preaches about a dog`s diet. Feed only name brand dry dog food that has 100% nutritional on the bag. No table scraps. But I cheated a bit and added a few spoons of canned dog food to the dry. My dogs lived long, mostly healthy lives.
