Impreza if you live in a climate where you will need all-wheel drive. Otherwise the corolla will have better fuel economy and reliability.

Corolla, the most reliable best quality model in this segment since the 1980's. The new lancer is nice but spotty reliability record, loses value fast, subaru is ok, I don't like Subaru's hardtop type doors-no frame around side windows, too rattly, noisy after a while.
