Don't worry I am shy also and people can say to talk more but they don't understand that its hard for us shy people!!
I actually found that when i first started working at 17 i came out of my shell alot with new people. and then after going to uni and meeting many people and going out to bar nights i came out of my shell alot also.
Now i am living in a new town and don't feel completely lonely and friendless (as i have some very close friends i catch up with regularly and don't really care to go out and make new friends) but i am very shy at work, especially in group situations and i'm the one who holds back from saying anything.
It depends how much it annoys you. If you feel by going out and joining a club or similar a good way to meet peopel and gain confidence then i would recommend it. however if you've always been shy you're probably destined to it (like me!) unless you seek professional help in gaining confidence in social situations or just being someone who you really arent in social situations and hoping this will help you feel more at ease.
I get frustrated and feel stupid being shy and have had people make rude comments to me but in the end i am me and i don't think i can change it so i just do things that make me comfortable and not worry about being a loud mouth and too over confident as sometimes thats unattractive also :-p
Best of luck :-)

start becomeing mores social by doing things that you are good at.. example, if you are a good runner, maybe start running in the park instead of on a treadmill, and start some conversations while youre doing it.. youll have something in common with the other person and along with that an easy conversation starter.. and if this example is something that you may do just think that if you do start to feel a little anxious you can just run away, and you wouldnt look like a complete weirdo.. : ) jk
i think shyness has a lot to do with having a lack of self-esteem most of the time, so if you do activities that you know youre good at you'll have the self-esteem to get that social ball rolling

i dont think you should worry about that, im shy myself and men are supposed to be confident and all that but not all men are like that, and also a lot of guys like shy girls, i dont think a guy would want a girl that is always screaming at them and being bossy... my girl was kinda shy when i met her but now shes hella sweet and nice and we talk about almost everything
