Is writing in sharpie, on top of CDs and DVDs that you burn, bad for the disc? I heard from someone that it could ruin the disc, but I don't see how.

I write on mine with a sharpie, but you should use a marker that was made for writing on Cds and DVDs. They are water based and will not ruin the data that is on the disc. It may seem like it won't, but wait about 10 years, and you will see.
