We respect it because it's ancient, and mysterious. It's what we're taught. It's the most sacred of sacreds. People want that, and they want and need other things that religion gives them. And... Lynus nailed it dude. As for exterminating it - a lot of good wisdom and philosophy would be lost, not to mention history and culture. The problem with religion is one: a lot of what it contains was put there by people who wanted (and want) to control and use the masses for their own gain (i.e. territorial conquest, send me your dollars, etc.), two: people take religion literally when it should be taken symbolically, and three:probably a majority (I don't know, what do you think?) of religious people don't deeply understand and take to heart the wisdom and worthwhile teachings of their own faiths. Also, ridiculing it will accomplish nothing, except maybe alienating everybody even more. I wish everybody would just accept that every person, dead, living or unborn, saw, sees, or will see things in their own way. How could we ever all agree? It's impossible. And it's not even important. What's important is how we treat each other - period.

Do we? The best defense against religion is religion. Hear me out... the only thing that keeps religion in check is other religions, and its because they hate each other and have NO respect for each others ideas. Granted, personally, I think any organized religion that requires belief in their ideas ONLY and to cast off any possiblility of another is completely ridiculous. But if it weren't for the muslims, the catholics would be ruling the world with their self-absorbent greed. Same with islam, and buddism, and any other religion. The only thing good about religion is that their are many, and they don't like each other. We need SOME sort of balance. i don't know... its what we have to work with.

It's difficult to respect a religion that produces people like Jimmy Swaggart, Jerry Falwell and the Reverand Ted Haggard

I don't respect any religion I respect people and their rights to believe as they choose.

Their personal religion is no more than your choice of clothing.

should we ridicule your clothing? Every person has the right to decide how they will live work and worship just because you choose not to does not give you the right to interfere in some ones choice to.

Religion is simply a pattern left in time as you live your life.We inherit that concept both before ,during and after .We would just be ridiculing ourselves just when we may need it the most.I can only ridicule an exasperating explanation.

Because ridiculing it to extinction would ruin our society...religion keeps our social values in check...its a pretty good code of conduct whether or not you believe in it.

Most people need something to grip onto to rationalize their existence and to validate themselves as "a good person".

A high percentage of people in 'so-called' developed countries say that they are religious (whatever that means) yet a very small percentage actually go to Church or pray.

General behavior in modern society suggests that religion is, at best, a convenience. It's called "hedging your bets".

Sad and pathetic really.

You're absolutely right.

A lot of people confuse respect for a person's right to believe, with respect for the belief itself. I personally don't respect religious belief any more than I respect belief in ghosts, the loch ness monster or faeries. I respect everyone's right to believe in such nonsense, but I don't respect those beliefs.

"People who don't like their beliefs ridiculed shouldn't have such ridiculous beliefs."

Nice try. The Romans tried that during the infancy stages of Christianity. They even tried to squash the spread of Christ's life and teachings by crucifixtion, feeding us Christians to the lions, and stoning us. We held strong then, we will continue to hold strong, in Christ of course.

One of the major reasons I rejected religion is because of its tendency to tell everyone what to think, how to live, everything basically. We can choose to reject religion, but by attempting to force everyone to think as we do, we're going against our own creed of free thinking.
