Why do people expect you to know spanish in the USA?

The illegal aliens have all but walked over the US! If I am going to learn a second language, it will be because I WANT to...not because someone who breaks the law WANTS me to so they don't have the respect to learn ENGLISH which IS the language that the US uses...if it wasn't then we wouldn't be using English in the courts...to be on a jury you need to speak and write fluently in English.

Yes, you are right when you want to learn another language is because you want. However do not forget that not only the US has "illegals" from Mexico, many people from Africa, China etc. come here illegally. Actually the US does not have any official language, some states do; for example, Iowa does have English as a official language in contrast to New Mexico which it official language is both Spanish and English. In my opinion is not harmful to learn another language, also when you decide another language take in mind that many people around the world speak Spanish, so choose another.

Nobody expects anyone to learn anything. But unfortunately nowadays if u know another language (mainly spanish) u have a chance to obtain more jobs for higher pay. Its like learning about computers or obtain a college degree,nobody forces u to learn or get either but it helps you out better in the job field.and gives you a more upper hand on other potential employees.

i don't know anyone who expects you to learn Spanish.... do what u want... so you are saying that illegals want you to learn Spanish right?? are you speaking for all of them? have you taken a poll and asked them if they wanted you to, or is it just your racist opinion simply because you don't like that fact that they are here? i think its more that.... it wont kill you to have to press 1...like i said you don't have to learn another language if you don't want to,, but why is it so wrong for Americans to give themselves that option.. expand your mind!!!

They do? Pretty much all spanish speakers both legal and illegal don't expect any white, black, indian, asian to know any spanish at all. We understand this is America and we respect that this is America. And yes, you're right, you don't have to learn any other language if you don't want to, it is your choice.

i don't see this at all. i don't think anybody expects me to learn spanish.

but just a side note...when i lived in mexico, i could barely learn spanish!! everyone wanted to use english, to practice. they didn't expect me to know any spanish at all, and they sure didn't get angry that i didn't speak it.
