That is a big and serious question. The best answer I can give you is that the terminal person needs to be treated based on their wishes.
The next thing to ensure is that the terminal person should be comfortable. There are wonderful pain medications available at this time so I never see a reason for a person to be in pain. Again you need to follow the terminal persons wishes. They may decide that they can bear some pain in order to be alert enough to be with their family.
It is also my philosophy that no one should die alone. If family is there that is perfect. If not I will sit with them and talk to them and hold thier hand.
Remember when a person becomes comotose, when they will not wake up or respond to you, they can probably hear you. Reminiscing with them is good for not only them but you too.
In our society death is still the great taboo.
Death should be treated with the same reverence that we treat the birth of a child with. To me it is merely part of the journey. Death ends up being much more difficult for those left behind.
I have seen people hang on tenaciously waiting for family to arrive. It is sometimes important that we let them know that it is okay to let go.
The death of a loved one is hard no matter what you do. You can make it easier for you and your loved one if you are with them and if you advocate for good pain control.
Good luck to you and yours.

Exactly.. make them as comfortable as possible. Death will
come sooner or later in those cases. At the end stages...it is
only humane to treat them with pain meds if they need it. Why
make people suffer. Although it may hasten the death faster...by
giving morphine drips...as long as the patient is suffering, then
it should definetly be mandatory. Some relatives get very hostile
at doctors and nurses, for trying to keep the person from being
in agony. Because the patient's relatives don't want to see them
die. They want to hang on to the last sec. That is being selfish
on their part. Because the patient's wishes should come first.

We should treat terminal patients with what is concurrent with their and or their families wishes. My dad had a terminal illness and he was kept comfortable at home with a visiting hospice nurse. We all chipped in caring for him. He died comfortably and not in much pain. He said he would come back and haunt us if we tried to 'save' him. It's alot easier to keep people comfortable than put tubes in them and try to 'save 'their life. FROM WHAT? MORE pain, and more agony? Sometimes I think people say 'do everythng' because of their fear of loss, not considering the pain hospitals can put people through trying to save them.
