Let us see how Islam values women. The holy Quran has the following to say:

"Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women). So good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded. As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them." (4:34)

Women's testimony is equal to half that of a man:
"Get two witnesses, out of your own men, and if there are not two men, then a man and two women, such as ye choose, for witnesses, so that if one of them errs, the other can remind her." (2:282)

Polygyny, and sex with slave and captive women:
"If ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans, marry women of your choice, two or three or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be fable to deal justly (with them), then only one, or (a captive) that your right hands possess, that will be more suitable." (4:3)

First of all Islam values women more than men as far as I'm concerned!
It is said that the doors of heaven are open to all the mothers. They don't say its open to all the fathers!
It is said that God has given the slight pleasure, that it is bound to this world only, of men's name being passed down to their children (so they would leave a legacy). But the pleasure, that would last for all eternity, of passing down your name to your kids is given to women in the after life.
It is said that a girl is a blessing (ne'mat) and a boy is a mercy (rahmat).
It is said by the Prophet that men's success lies in the women's hands.
There are alot more that I can say about how women are praised in Islam and how high their place is.
The Prophet had a daughter, Hazrat Fatima (salam allah alaiha), he loved her so much. He said that whatever makes Fatima angry makes me angry, whatever Fatima likes I like, etc. I don't remember the exact quote but this is almost what he said.
No man is allowed to lay a hand on a woman. Hitting a woman is not permitted in Islam and it is one of those sins that cannot be forgiven. God wouldn't have mercy in this case.
As for not looking straight into eachother's eyes. Some people do it some don't. And it is done by both sexes and not only by women. It is a sign of modesty.

EDIT: did the person who gave the thumbs down actually read what I wrote?!

Muslim men treat Muslim women well, within the context of Islam. Muslim women are typically more submissive and obedient than any other religious women. In Islam, Muslim women are taught to cover themselves and avoid contact with other men, because their "charms" will overcome men.

This concept to me seems to portray Muslim men as weak and unable to control their emotions, lust and desire.

Because the Muslim word is stuck in the past. Muslim men are afraid of women and try to keep them in a submissive roll. The don't want them to be treated as equals.
