If you mean "in heat" like an cat or dog goes into heat, it's when the female is in a fertile time of their specie's breeding cycle. They can get preggers then, and leave you with a box of kittens or puppies to find homes for!

If you mean like a dog or cat in heat, the female is in "season", or ready to be bred at that time.
