A mutt from the pound is best because you have saved it and it is not so high strung as certain "well-bred" dogs. It will love you to pieces and be your best friend if you show it a little love and attention!

I completely agree with Rori. "Soft-Coated Wheaten terriers" are great dogs! Not too small- not too big. Only really need the *very* occasional haricut. Except if you were to google wheaten terrier, it might look a bit odd because it would've been cut all funnily.
GREAT FAMILY DOG.
I find that families will get labradors or some sort of big dog, because they think it's really cute, then when they grow up they're not so cute anymore, and the poor dog wonders what its done wrong, why it's getting ignored now.
There is no straight answer, because it "which is the best dog breed' is really an opinion question.

By far, I think that Shetland Sheepdogs are the best breed of dog. They make excellent family dogs, and are beautiful to show as well. They are also great for agility training, playing soccer out in the yard, or just watching TV with. They love to do anything with you. They are also extrememly affectionate, and a great size for cuddling up with. If you like the look of collies, but cant take care of a dog of that size, then shelties are awesome dogs. If you are looking to get a puppy, or adopt a dog, then by all means look into getting a sheltie!

I like Golden Retrievers the best, but labs are good dogs too. These breeds are the best for families.

It depends what sort of lifestyle you have. If you have a relatively big house/garden, lots of time to spare, and you want a dog for family life, Lanradors are perfect. However, if you have a smaller house, or not much time to spare, then mongerels are god companions for you. Bear in mind that pedigree breeds can be harder to maintain, because their hair can be of a better quality.
Hope this helps! XD

The best breed is the one that suits the owner best. For me, its the Italian Greyhound, for my husband, the Boxer. My daughter prefers the Husky. My son likes them all.
Each breed has a different purpose, a unique personality, do your research and choose "the One" that fits into your lifestyle.
