First soak the glass in warm dishwater for a while to break down the paper, then scratch off with your finger nail, or plastic spoon or knife. Then rubbing alcohol, or "isopropal alcohol" is the best thing for removing any adhesive.
Find it at any drug store or walmart type store by the peroxide & other first aid supplies. There are different strenghts, measured in %, get the strongest you can find. It's cheap too, $1 or less/bottle, and doesn't contain any toxic chemicals like other cleaners.
It also works great for cleaning lots of other things including glass & mirrors, some types of plastics, tv's and monitors (old crt glass tube types, don't know if it's a good idea to use on plastic plasma or lcd screens.) Works especially good for removing nicotine/tar from cigarrette smoke.

Boil the glass Make sure that it is done in a large pot with enough water to fill the glass and cover at least 75% of the glass. If it is a BALL jar or similar, this will not be a problem. Thin glass you have to be careful with. When you are cooling the glass, the best way is to leave it in the water filled pot and let it cool in the water. If you try to cool down glass too quickly it will break, so do NOT put it on a cold counter top, in the sink or run cold water in it. This is effectively how we removed glue and labels off of plastic soda containers when I worked at a plastics recycling plant some years ago. In that process, we used hot water, agitation and caustic soap to clean the bottles.
