A month ago my daughter spotted a stray cat outside a Minneapolis hotel. For a month I fed it and tried to catch it with a live trap. After a large snowstorm the cat began to trust me and would not run away when it saw me. Once it went into the trap for food but the trap didn't trigger. Two days later I was able to entice her to play through the lattice of the hotel deck and she walked into the trap while I crouched next to it. Afraid that the trigger wouldn't catch, I pulled the front end of the trap up, but she crawled out. I caught her as she struggled to get back behind the lattice. When I wouldn't let go she hissed at me. I let her go, and realized that all the trust has been broken. The next day she retreated further under the deck but didn't run away. I left food for her but didn't try to catch her. Will she ever trust me again? Should I just set out the trap and walk away, or continue to feed her, talk to her and try to play with her before setting the trap again?

Probably the only way for the cat to trust you is for you to give it time. Continue doing what your doing, it is mostlikley scared. Leave it alone for a couple days (dont bother it ect.) hopefully it will come around.
I hope this helps.

The same thing has happened to me before.....one cat went back in the trap 15 minutes later and the other had to be fed for another week. The only way I could get the second cat was to let it follow me into my home then close the door. He did start to panic once I closed the door but now he comes over every day to be fed. That cat will trust you again but you might need to get it close enough to catch it by hand.

I would leave food in the trap for a few weeks without being near it and let her build up trust again. You can be nearby but not next to the trap or too close. Get another better trap from animal rescue (ASPCA, Humane society etc)They are free to use. leave some cat nip in the trap too and make it a good place to be again.
stray cats are a time investment. If you go slow, you will get the kitty. If you rush it, you will be disappointed.
Cat ettiquitte is different from humans in that when we are scared we want to be comforted and "petted" and cats want to be far far away and not touched when they are scared or have had a trauma. If you are petting them while they are scared, then when they recoup and you try to pet them they will associate being scared with the petting. All is not lost and she should forgive your faux pas in a few weeks. Just go back to the normal food in trap(or cat nip) while you are visible. Call your local shelter to help you trap or to give you advice.www.petfinder.com has a list of local shelters near you when you put in your zip code.

She will trust you again. Set the trap and continue to feed her and slowly but surely you can graduate to talking to her. Feral cats are hard. I've got 3. I suggest you get a FIV test on her before you get her immunizations. It might not make any difference to you, but you have to take care of them a little differently than other cats. Oh, you've got to get a better trap, most kitty rescue places have ones you can use, as well as animal shelters.

I would continue to feed her, talk to her and try to play with her. You could try to pet her a little while she is eating if she will let you get that close. Maybe try to entice her with something good and see if she will come close enough for you to hand it to her. If she will let her have it but don't try and grab her or anything because she will more than likely run away. It may take a while but be patient. She is still trying to figure you out. I had some feral cats around my house and everyday I would feed them and walk away a little bit ,gradually I was able to get closer and closer and then I would pet them a little while they were eating. Before long they would let me pet them. Just be patient with her she will come around. Good luck.
