The Basenji is also known as the African Bark less Dog. Obviously because the breed was originated in Africa and is bark less. The Basenji is not a mute dog and can "talk" but can not bark like other dogs. They are known to be the oldest purebred dog around today, therefore, it is a very rare breed. The Basenji is a small to medium sized dogs with a short coat, needing little grooming. They need a lot of exercise to stay happy, they are not like your average small sized dog. They are known to live to 16 years old and up but the average lifespan of the Basenji is 14 years.

They are affectionate to people he knows, extremely intelligent, alert and independent. They get along extremely well with children and other animals but they must be socialized when young. They do require to be in inside dog and hate being alone or without a companion for periods of time. They are great escape artists so high fences is a must. They should be on a lead while walking in public places due to their almost Hound like scent instincts. The Basenji is excellent in agility and is usually easy to train. They can be stubborn at times but are fast learners.

The Basenji is a fairly healthy breed with only 1 main health concern. It is known as 'Fanconi Syndrome'. Fanconi Syndrome appears when the renal tubes of the kidney begin to fail doing it's job of reabsorbing nutrients. Due to the fact that Fanconi Syndrome can kill, buying your Basenji from a reputable and registered breeder should cut down the chances of the disease popping up in your dog as it is a genetic disease.

I love Basenjis. They are native of Africa and they do not bark. They are cat-like, with alot of attention to grooming and little-no smell. They have short hair and curly tails. Basenjis are VERY playful dogs and have the intelligence of a 2-3 year-old child. They are escape artists, always remain slightly non-domisticated and must be occupied much as a child should. They can get bored easily and then can become destrructive. You must have a well fenced yard and watch for escape attempts if they become restless. They are really great dogs and just delightful to own, but you must be commited to their upkeep. With Besenjis it is never a dull moment.

A Basenji is a small-medium sized dog that is from Africa. It has a curled tail, and is known to be the barkless dog. It doesn't bark, but it does make ululation sound. It is apparently a fun dog, and cleans itself like a cat! It's a very unique breed of dog.

My boyfriend has a basenji, and they do bark. Well, she doesn't arf arf, but more like an urf urf. She also growls and groans and talks. I recommend you to try an obedience school if you get one because my boyfriend's is a "problem dog". They are still almost wild and his dog bites strangers and HATES children and other animals. She also opens doors cabinets boxes bags the refridgerator garbage cans etc. She almost couldn't be housebroken. They have had to crate train her because she has to be watched constantly. It's not that my boyfriend hasn't tried to train her well, either, this isn't his first dog and his other dog is very well behaved. It's just her. She thinks she should be in Africa.

They are awesome dogs and they came from Africa. While choosing one though, be sure not to get it from a newspaper or petstore. Look up a good breeder or adopt from a shelter/rescue. A good breeder will not sell pups any younger than 8 weeks old and they will probably put you on a waiting list. The pup/dog, if coming from a breeder should be AKC registered only but if they come from the shelter it of course doesn't matter wether or not they are registered.

Be forewarned--Basenji's don't bark, but they can be very noisy! They howl, whine, moan, scream, etc. and they also like to climb.
