My son worked with a 40 year old man who was afraid of dogs. My son's dog is small and really sweet and gentle, and she doesn't jump up on people. He introduced the man to the small dog--just a few minutes a day at first. Gradually, the man realized that the dog wasn't going to hurt him. Once he got over his fear of small dogs, another friend introduced him to a larger, but still gentle, dog. It took some time, but now the man is not automatically scared of dogs. He does know, however, that some types of dogs are not friendly. With that kind of dog, it's best to stay still and be calm. Dogs get scared of people too; especially people who scream, shout, and wave their arms around.
When you first meet a dog, ignore it for a minute or two. Then slowly hold the back of your hand out toward the dog's nose and let the dog sniff your hand--you'll be friends for life.
By the way, when I was 4 years old a nasty spaniel dog bit me. I didn't let that turn me off dogs because I know that most dogs are good.

Your a veterinary student and dogs are afraid of you? LOL Okay, it could be many things, in order to overcome them I suggest you get 2-4 dogs and live with them a while. You will pick up on dog behavior and body language much better. It will become second nature. We can't have any scary vets out there. It must be your body language that is scaring them or your size and you will overcome that with experience.
If it is you that is afraid of dogs living with a few will teach you there body language also and you will be able to determine what they are about to do with experience. All vets need that type of experience if they are going to work with small animals and not farm animals.

Stay calm, don't jump around, scream or run from them. They generally think you are playing and you get them upset. Talk softly in a friendly manner to a dog and if the dog is wagging his tail he is usually receptive to you touching him. If the dog is growling and his hair is bristled, back off. If the dog is receptive to you touching him hold your hand out where he can sniff or lick it before you touch him. Do NOT reach across the top of his head until he has acknowledged you. Even then it is usually best to pet the side of his neck. Usually a dog will not bother you unless it feels threatened or you are invading a space it feels responsible for.
If you are just out walking and see a dog and don't want to be bothered just ignore the dog. He might bark at you from a few feet away but will usually not bother you. If he starts coming close up behind you just turn around, stand and look at him until he backs off. Then turn and continue on your way.

Did you have a bad experience?
Why would you become a vet when 50% or more of
your patients would be canine, when you have a fear of
them? It's like someone afraid of heights wanting to be
be a paratrooper.
If you are serious, you need to familiarize yourself with dogs
on a regular basis. Go to dog shows, go to petstores that
have adoption clinics. The dogs present will most likely
be very friendly and would be easier for you to work on
your phobia.

I used to be afraid of dogs too. When I was little I was attacked and bitten on the elebow. I don't know how I got over it. Maybe just being around other dogs that were not like the one that got me. See if your friends or family has dogs and see if you can vist them. Let them come to you and sniff you and make friends and talk to them in a real gentle voice. Maybe, even talk to someone that has a dog that goes to like nursing homes or hospitals to visit. They are real good animals...Good luck to you!!

Get a large-breed puppy and raise it. It's a cinch no puppy is going to scare you, n' est ce pas?
When full grown your dog will be both companion and protector.
If you decide on a black labrador I can assure you - it will love you and trust you like no human ever will.
If I'm wrong consider THIS an apology.

Go ahead and find a mean dog and get your bite over with. Once you see that it's not that bad fear will be gone.
