My inlaws filed their taxes wrong because they had some moron who didn't know what they were doing do them. They didn't put their dependent son on it and I was wondering although the incorrect forms were mailed is there any way to still change it or get the forms back so I can get them back?

They can file an amended tax form. But be sure that the son actually can be claimed as a dependent. The rules changed a couple years ago and in many cases, someone who maybe could be claimed a few years ago could not under the new rules.

If he doesn't pay over half of his own support, then he can be claimed as a dependent child if he's under age 19, OR is under 24 and is a full-time student.

If he doesn't meet those rules, he might be able to be claimed as a dependent relative, if they paid over half of his support AND he didn't make over $3300.

If he doesn't meet either of these situations, they can't claim him, even if they supported him totally. For example, if he's 19, not a full time student, made over $3300, they can't claim him even if he lives at home and is supported by his parents. Or if he's 24, a full time student, lives at home, they support him, but he made $3301 last year, they can't claim him.

You just file an amended tax form. You can go back up to 3 years I think.

File a 1040x. If you owe more, the deadline is April 15 this year.

If you think you get a bigger refund, the deadline is three years from now to claim it.

Next year, tell your moron tax preparer that you actually have a dependent son. It's not his/her fault.

Either talk to an accountant or go to the irs website, irs.gov to figure out what you need to do to amend the form that is incorrect. It happens all the time, I'm sure.

You will need to file an amended return. It looks like to 1040 but has an entire set of second column for corrections.
