I am planning to buy a 40 inches R-Series LCD TV from Samsung, but just want to be sure about the viewing distance, as my room is not very big.

The magic number is 2.5 factor. Take the screen size multiply by 2.5 and that will be your optimal viewing distance. 2.5 x 40 = 100 inches / 12 inches = 8.3 ft.

2.5 is for 720p tv's. Use 1.5 for 1080p tv's.

I think the formula is the width of the screen x by 3 .Therefore the correct viewing distance is 40 ins.x3 =120ins.or 10 feet.

LCD are much safer than traditional CRTs. I sit as close as 12 inches without any problem.
