Well I believe the first part because people can be idiots. They still are idiots and if he were to show up again the same thing would happen again but it would be something other than a steak in the ground (cross, whatever).
We don't have to believe in the same things. That is what unconditional love and compassion are all about. If we could handle that, we wouldn't be trying to convert each other and we would be treating each other with a lot more respect. If we could handle that Jesus wouldn't have died on that steak in the ground and no one would have ever spit on him ...the spitting thing was probably something a scribe slipped into the story for empahsis! They did that the bible is full of their creative writing!
Hense the "...they know not what they do.." I totally believe it's still the problem!
I love him as a holy man not a god. When he said he was the son of God I believe it was to portray to us that we are all children of God and to trust in him during a time when he was an innovator in religious faith. Argh! religion is marketing, lets just say faith. The poor man just wanted to bring people together!

Ironically that quote is one of many which caused me to leave Christianity. The "Father" part is what got me.
