Hi. This will be our first over seas tour and I'm a little concerned about the housing situation. My husband's Sponsor is not married so I cant talk to his wife and his Senior Chief wont talk to me. One of my questions is... What is the housing like? What is the waiting list like? what is the base like? is it easy to get a job there? What are the average costs for daycare? What are the schools like
( elementary school that is ) and really any thing else you have to offer about quality of life and general living standards. Thanks so much, and I'll see you in a month.

My husband and I are not new to the Navy I was in for 5 years and he has been in for 7 1/2 years. This is our 3rd command but our first over seas command and it's more then a little overwhelming with little to no info to go on since I have a little one starting school in September and a little one on the way I don't want to live in a hotel for ever, I want to get settled in as soon as possible. Thank you

Oh and my husbands not going back to sea duty, hes on shore this time, so I'm not really worried about deployments, and if he had to do another Oh well it wouldn't be our first or last. I would survive while hes gone.

I am serving on active duty in the Navy for 8 years. You join the Navy go to bootvcamp in Chicago (Great Lakes, IL) and and then go to a "A" school where you learn your job. These 'A' schools are all over the continental US. Anyhow, after graduating 'A' school, you go to your first command for the remainder of your enlistment of 5 years. In the end, you really have no control over where you end up. You fill out a form saying where you want to go called a "Dream Sheet", but they send you really where they need you. So for me, my wish to go to Hawaii ended up in orders for me to go to Everett, WA. Note that once at a West Coast command it gets difficult to get orders to a East Coast command and vice versa. You may have to do special assignment or go to combat duty to Iraq/Afganistan ...on the ground to get such orders! The majority of people get their 1st orders to San DIego, the Puget Sound on the W. Coast or Japan. If you join, plan on not being in Hawaii and having to earn a tour there only after 5-6 years of service in a place you don't want to be. Hawaii is tough destination to get , since there are no large ships there. The numbers are needed in the large operation zones (San Diego, Norfolk, Yokosuka, Japan and Bremerton, WA ). The Navy is and alwasy will be about going to weird places. Maybe see Hawaii a few days ever 2 years on deployments but don't join thinking you'll definelty be in Hawaii. You will be somewhere else and I guarantee you that you'll be at sea most of the time no matter where you are stationed. It's the Navy and ships aren't made to sit in port!

The housing there is great. Most of it is new. They've been building like crazy since the late 1980's. Finding a job won't be a problem, but day care will be expensive. Auto insurance will be outrageous. Crime is a problem, but not on base.

Pay plenty of attention during orientation when they talk about crime and areas of the island to avoid.

You might try out these yahoo groups:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/militaryspouses_HI/

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LOTS-Pacific/

Depending on how active they are you could find wives who are currently living there to give advice.

You might also try http://www.cinchouse.com/. If your DH is subs http://www.submarinewivesclub.org/index.php.

Or look for information here: http://www.hawaii.navy.mil/PersonnelSupport/PersonnelSupport_Index.htm.

Even if your DH's sponsor isn't married he should be able to find out if your command has an ombudsman and either pass on your information to her or her information to you.

Best of luck with your move!

I hope it's better now than when I was there. Your hubby is new to the Navy so you may have to wait about 18 months to get into housing. Then he will be gone for about 9 months. It's tough.
