The only problem is the whole, I don't know if he likes me. Plus, here comes the big one, he lives 1500 miles away. I like him but I'm not sure how to hint it without being to obvious. What should I do?

Well start slow. And think of it this way - he's very far away, so if you make a complete idiot of yourself you don't have to talk to him again. :)
Just get to know him. Talk to him a lot. Get a good long distance carrier, like IDT and enjoy spending time on the phone and writing back and forth. Write to him through the snail mail. It makes it more personal. And then he has something that you touched with him.
Distance isn't that bad. I carried on a relationship for 3 years with me on the West Coast and him in England. We talked almost every day - good phone rates since we weren't making tons of money.
And honestly if I had to do it again - I would. Not with him (other reasons) but just the expereince wasn't as hard a people think. You do long to be with him after a while - but that can be fixable.
Just be careful what you ask for - you just may well get it. Make sure you are ready for this kind of commitment and work before you sign up for it.
