Of course! It's your soup, you can put whatever you want in it.

Smoked neck bones will give a similar flavor as the ham hocks.

Yes, you can they are actually a little less fatty than hocks. One thing to watch for is that the neckbones will break up and be in small pieces in the soup so you have to spend a little more time pulling them out of the soup.

Absolutely! But you might want to tie the neck bones up in cheese cloth since those tend to fall apart after getting boiled-- pieces of bone in your food tends to ruin the enjoyment. You'll actually get more flavor from the neckbones but if you want meat in your soup then you might want to chop up some ham or bacon.

You can substitute just about any meaty bones you wish. It will give it a different flavor, but different is not bad. Just don't have a purist over to critique the soup.

for sure. u no what else is so good. cottage ham. i cook it along with the beans. when the ham would be done, the soup will be done. let the cottage ham cool. cut in nice thick pieces for sandwiches and chunks to toss back in the beans.
bomb! we love it.

Yes but be sure to strain you broth --I cook the neck bones by them selves first then add the strained results to my beans then cook .
I have used browned and drained sausage and add diced onion and a few carrots to a pot of beans it is a nice change.
