Today I accidentally stepped on my 16 wk old Lhasa puppy's back when he scooted under my foot while going up the door step stoop.

I'm not sure exactly how far I crushed him because it all happened so fast, but I think a considerable portion of my weight was on him & he was down to his chest. He was stunned at first and then yelped. Of course I was yelping a lot more than he did.

He was a little shook up after that, walked a little weird & slow after that, but appears fine now, running around, playing & walking up and down stairs, eating, drinking.

Do you think I did any permanent damage to his spine?

He was deathly scared of my feet for about 2 hours... I thought some fear for feet is good because the pup is always under our feet... but unfortunately a few hours later he forgot and doesn't run away from my clumsy feet anymore at all.

I'm worried that I could have misaligned his back or something....

or perhaps not, because he's not in any pain?

Thoughts

It sounds like he's okay, but please take him to the vet's to make sure. They can do a simple xray in moments that will reassure you and avoid any serious, longterm problems if there IS something that needs to be treated.

I know you must have felt horrible......but it was an accident that couldn't be avoided. Take comfort in that.

However, not checking with your vet and hoping any underlying problems will clear up and go away wouldn't be an accident - it would be irresponsible. And THAT, you can avoid!

Good luck to you and the puppy!

I wouldnt worry. When I was outside running with my 2-yr-old shetland sheepdog, he all of a sudden stopped running, and I was behind him, and I practically ran on top of him! (I know that it was with basically all of my weight too...) He yelped too, and I felt terrible! Luckily though, after like 5 minutes he was up and running again, and seemed to have forgot that it had even happened. Your puppy will be absolutely fine. People trample their pets all the time...

He's fine, just a little humbled. Guess he will be watching where you walk from now on.....however, if you are truely concerned keep an eye on his behavior just as you have been, if there is any change I would seek your Vet's advice.

Puppies are very much made of rubber, bouncing back and fine after something that would make us cry for days.

Good Luck and pat his head for me

It sounds like he is okay now. When my dog was a pup, he was laying down under my chair that rocked. I didn't know he was there and I squashed his little head. He was okay, but it really shook us up! Accidents happen. It was a mistake, so don't beat yourself up over it. Just keep an eye on him. Talk to your vet about him when you go next, or call them right away if you are concerned about his little back.

Keep an eye on him. Unless he is showing signs of a problem there isn't much the vet can or will do. But if he should start showing problems you must remember to tell the vet this happened so he can better asses what is going on.

I would just keep an eye on him. See if he's walking funny, keep stroking his back, put a little pressure on it, see if it bothers him. If he seems uncomfortable, take him to the vet.

And just a little side note - this will remind him about staying out from under people's feet. A lot of puppies and kittens get stepped on because they are just everywhere, but one way or another they learn.

Well feel good that your pal is in seemingly good shape. I have a Lhasa Apso as well and they are GREAT for tripping their people. They don't mean to, of course, but they just do! Mine will stop short just inches in front of me!

That being said--if he seems okay then "WHEW!" But if there is ANY doubt whatsoever take him to the vet!

Lhasas are just great!

If he is playing, running around, eating and drinking like normal, he should be fine. Just watch him and if he does show ANY signs of limping or soreness in the back, neck or legs, take him to your vet. If you are still nervous about it, just call the vet in the morning and tell him or her what happened and see what they say.

my dog always gets kicked in the chin ,NOT on purpose, because she is always on ur heels. don't think u did damage. but if there r signs like walking weird, seeming not to feel something like only 1 toe, that could mean the nerve was hurt. wait for signs.

Hi puppy's tend to do that. I don't think you have done any damage if he is running around. But if you are relay worried got and get him checked.
