Whether a bird really flies or just glides for short distances depend both upon what species of bird you're referring to and whether the bird about to try to fly has had his wings clipped.
Through time, birds have enjoyed success in large numbers on earth by evolving the hollow bones and impressively complex brains and feathers that allow them to fly in defiance of gravity; in some instances, they have even evolved the sense to plan ahead and make decisions comparable to the decisions that a healthy five-year-old human child would make.
Ducks walk when they can fly because they like walking. They don't fear cars because they aren't very skilled or experienced very many cars. Some birds, like city birds, have learned that in the quest for food and nesting materials, the road has become a great place for them to play. Some, like a group of crows in Japan, have even learned to crack nuts using cars, then swoop in at the crosswalk signal to pick up the cracked nuts.
Why any one bird (like "the chicken") crossed the road will always probably be a mystery.

Birds can both fly and glide. They usually have to fly to get to a good altitude, but this can be tiring so they try to glide as much as possible and ride thermals (a warm updraft that can allow them to glide and actually rise in altitude)
They walk because flying is a strenuous and tiring activity.

First of all birds fly they dont glide!!! Their wings are constantly moving they might glide for a few seconds but not much longer. Now about the duck question... What do you expect of something with such a small brain?

gliding is a form of flying.
ducks dont fly across roads because the need a run up to take off anyway, this is because they are heavy. they aqlso need a lot of space to land.

Walking consumes less energy than flying.

Some can do both. But it's not called gliding, it's called soaring. Some birds can soar for hours without flapping their wings.

Depends on the bird. Some can only glide. Some can't fly at all.
I dunno know why walk across the street when they can fly. Why do humans walk when they can crawl?

I don't know if all birds can glide but it depends on what type of bird you're referring to. some birds have shorter wings and can move quickly, others have long wings for soaring long distances.
