Masaccio creation of space. The barrel vault shows off the new found interest with setting the scene in its own world . Paintings of this date and before sugested a landscape sometimes but really the figures are arranged along the picture plane having a frieze like effect. In Massacio's Madonna ( and I am afraid i cannot remember the date difference) has no space of its own .
