I answered this a couple of questions ago so I'll give my opinion here, too
I've had windows vista (home premium) for almost a month. It came with my Dell notebook (e1505).
1. Vista is a memory HOG! Unless you have at leage 2gb (recommended) it won't install or it won't work at all.
2. If you're using your computer for everyday or entertainment use, like most of us, I would suggest Vista Home Premium (BASIC is not worth it). The next step up from premium is the vista business series which im pretty sure the average home user doesnt need.
3. Vista is STILL NEW- be prepared for incompatible programs. Upgrading from XP is not as easy as they make it appear to be.
4. Add that to the fact that certain computers have really weak processors so they will not be able to handle vista to begin with. Im not knocking celeron or amd or anything but there are much better ones out there. I'm on an intel dual core and its handling it well so far.
5. Last, advice for everyone- don't jump on the band wagon just because its new. All of the new users are basically TEST cases! We're the ones who deal with the tweaks, security issues, etc until it becomes 'perfected'. I personally don't mind using a brand new OS only because I have a lot of 'computer people' in my family so if something goes wrong, its not a big deal to me.
**Look into windows XP pro or just hang on to XP for now. Unless you have a BRAND NEW computer with enough RAM and an EXCELLENT processor, don't deal with Vista**
However, the pros for Vista would include easier use of programs, very nice, clean interface, (you should check out the Media Center) but then again, many of the the pros of vista are just purely cosmetic. Anything vista can do, xp can do just as well.
Hope that helps!

CUT THE CRAP! Just as Windows for Work Group replaced WINDOWS, and Windows 95 replaced Windows For Work Groups, Windows NT 4.0 replaced Windows 95, and then came Windows ME. Windows 98, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. VISTA IS replacing XP! END OF STORY!
What should you purchase?
There are four reasons to purchase a new Operating System (OS):
1. The new OS has functions that are important to YOU, YOU WANT them and your current OS can not perform those functions.
2. You have decided to buy/build a new computer, you definitely buy the latest OS. Too, always purchase a separate hard drive for the operating system. If you want, partition the hard drive and install both systems.
3. The manufacture will no longer support the old operating system.
4. I WANT THE NEW OPERATING SYSTEM!!!
Never buy an UPGRADE VERSION.
This requires the old one to be present before you can install/reinstall the new. Worse, the upgrade picks up all the crap on the hard drive and what ever issues in the old OS!
If your system is running, you are happy with XP, curious about VISTA, but a cheap hard drive, install it and load VISTA onto it. Now you have dual boot system, nothing happens to your XP and you can play, use, delete VISTA and not change your XP system!
Remember to go to www.microsoft.com and let that site update your operating system!
Do not buy VISTA until that site runs a test on your system and gives you the OK!
Major issues with VISTA: Must have 2GB RAM
Graphic Card must support Direct X 10
Enough space on the hard drive. CPU capability!
VISTA embodies newer tech, better graphics, better security, faster cores! It is not about running 5/10 year old tech! You do not have to buy it, but if you want it, be prepared to configure your system to support it!
VISTA IS the new PC Operating System, like all the others, 2 years from now it will not be an issue! AGAIN, install it on a different hard drive, separate from your data!

XP is great. Wait a year or so before buying Windows Vista. It'll take them a while to work out all the bugs, which happens with new software. For the moment, stick to Windows XP.

Hello. I'm Dell Tech, a computer specialist.
Your question is whether XP is better than Vista.
Take my word for it: Vista is by far better than XP, but not at the moment... I strongly recommend you to purchase Vista and allow up to 6 months for the completion to finalize. Many software incompabilities with Vista today, but all those dysfunctions will be corrected while the completion process continues. Within the next 3 months you should be able to play all games and download the MOST wanted softwares available out there... Vista is brand new and it takes time for the operating system to complete... Yes, XP is better than Vista now, but won't in the next upcoming months.
the final result is: Vista is by far better than XP.

I love my new Vista software but alot of programs are not yet compatable with it- had a hell of a time getting the updates just to get my scanner to work with it, but things are coming along. So right now vista is in it's infantile state and withing the next year it'll take off. If you remember people had the same comments about windows XP when it came out! Now it's the most saught after software.

for now, xp is better than vista. Since vista is new there are still things that they should work on. Not everything is going to be perfect on the first attempt. They will probably make a better edition in a year to vista and then it will be better and more secure.

For now, windows xp is better than windows vista.

Leave Vista for at least a year, until ALL the bugs are ironed out!
There is still a lot of programs and device drivers that will NOT work with Vista.
But if you have your heart set on it, then GO for it!

XP is better right now. In a few years, it will be far obsolete. Just stick with xp for the meantime, that way more stuff is compatible.
Just wait a little while, and make sure your setup is up to par.

XP is much better, at least for now. Microsoft NEVER releases good OS's on their first attemp. Why did you think they release so many different "updates"<<--(improvements)? Vista might be okay, in 6-12 months. For now, don't buy it.
