Both my parents are smokers and are around that age, and my grandma also smokes. She's 57 and I don't know exactly what will happen. What has already happened to themselves they can't fix? I know there's a lot of things in cigarettes that can kill you, but I want to know what 15 years of smoking can do to you.

Also, would I get secondhand smoke if I'm around people that smoke constantly, even if they try to stop the smoke from being around you?

Common knowledge shows that a nicotine habit is a gamble. You will meet people who have smoked for 35 years and haven't developed cancer or any obviously life threatening condition, then you'll meet someone who gets lung or throat cancer after 20 years of smoking. I've often heard it has a lot to do with pre-existing conditions and genetics.

You can read about the known effects of nicotine. It will definitely constrict the blood vessels, therefore raising the blood pressure and heart rate. It will also make a person short-winded by busting air sacks and depositing thick tar residue in the lungs. Then there are the other chemicals, some of which are carcinogens and other poisons with unknown effects, most likely not good.

Well - it's not good. Each person is different. Some people smoke into their 90s with no problems - but that's not the norm. Smoking is the cause of many diseases today. It is the single most harmful thing a person can do to themselves... and to others.

It's never too late to quit. Lungs can regenerate with lifestyle change. Constricting blood vessels is a bad thing (stroke, brain problems, early skin wrinkles, throat polyps) - not to mention emphazima, cancer, etc.

I had a doctor once say "most everyone has dormant cancer cells".... smoking is like opening the door for cancer cells to activ ate and spread". Best scenario - don't smoke.

If you have had a steady diet low in fat and drank plenty of water everyday during the past 15 years the risk is minimal as combined high fatty food intake contributes to cancer in the body and one cup of coffee a day is more than enough .As i know a chain smoker who chain smoked for 20years and stoped but was constantly exercising a fat free diet and lots of water everyday not to much just enough and had a preservative free diet. The nicotine was constantly washed out of this persons system.

If your parents are smokers and your friends are smokers, you are a smoker whether you like it or not. Ask them to consider your health if they don't care about their own. Stay away from the smoke or take the consequences. No one needs to be told what smoke does to our lungs whether it is first-hand smoke or second-hand smoke, it is smoke never the less.

15 years of smoking can damage your lungs and perhaps kill you. Don't pick up the habit.
