No, they join because they feel that the skills that they have could best be used serving their country. They are among the most noble Americans.

I've attended college, double major in International Politics/ Ancient History with a minor in Religion. I've also served 4 1/2 years in the Marine Corps (Infantry & Special Operations) and 5 years in the Army (MI). At no time in college was I ever challenged mentally or physically as much as I was in the military, and that was with a 3.2 GPA and a full time job. Most college students aren't required to remain awake days on end, with little food, in blistering heat or bone chilling cold, after having walked 20 miles with an 80 lb pack, on the top of a mountain or 3 atmosphers below the water and asked to take an exam...any exam. Mistakes in college are quite a bit more forgiving than they are in combat, do not fool yourself into thinking you hold a monopoly on intelligence simply because you hold a degree. If anything, by asking your rediculous question you have proven the total opposite.

Well, that is a question for an anti military zealot and a troll, but the answer is that the military profession is quite possibly the noblest option a young person can take. Without young people willing to risk their lives and bodies in the protection of their communities, there would be no communities. Most people that I know who go into the military do it for a combination of reasons, the most common being a selfless desire to serve their country. Secondarily, many go in intending to use the benefits to attend college when they might otherwise not be able to afford it. The last time I looked at it, idiots didn't last long in colleges and universities. Some of the brightest people I ever met either are or have been soldiers.
A lot of our weapons systems are pretty complicated, and the military really isn't looking to recruit idiots, as you are suggesting.
No one should hold respect and admiration as much as the common soldier. He suffers privations and risks that you wouldn't know anything about for little pay and gets precious little respect for it from those who lack his courage and willingness to sacrifice. Sometimes I wonder myself why so many young people go into military service given that part of their job is protecting the sorts of individuals who might think it's cute to ask a question like that.

I think some people join the military because they can't get into college and its a good living; however not always. My husband was valedictorian when he graduated and kept a 4.0 at college then decided to join the army. Some people do it for the money for college, some because they feel its their duty, and some cause its the only thing they can do with their lives.

No it could be several reasons maybe thats the only way they can afford to go to college or they may want to get training in a special field or simply they just might like to serve their country. Just because someone joins the Army or Marines doesnt mean they are stupid.

Usually because it's the only way they can afford it, and those who have the option to attend college when they get out are foolish not to just because related study or not, a college degree makes a big difference in getting hired and better pay or a mortgage, where people have always dismissed service in the army as a positive employment factor, although Marine background really helps you if you go into security or law enforcement, or run afoul of the law and the officer is a former marine...................

Uh, NO. I personally had a very high IQ and scored very high on the ASVAB. I was in college when I joined up, but decided there had to be more to life than books and people TELLING me how to think (professors). WHile I was in, I still took college classes when I could.
In 94 when I got out, I decided that I didn't NEED a degree. I had accomplished so much more than I would have WITH a degree. I now am doing exactly what I want in life and enjoying every minute of it!

That would imply those who go to college are somehow smarter would it not? Unfortunately I have met some college graduates that are far dumber than some of the soldiers I have met. Not everyone measures success the same way I know of companies that are run by veterans with no college and I have met college grads pumping gas for a living or is there an underlying agenda to this question?

NO 99% join because they love their country and believe they are doing the right thing for their family...the other 1% are just crazy and like to shoot at things....A lot of people pass up college for the military, join in order to pay for college, or join after getting a degree because they can rank up quickly.

Yes because all of those officers with COLLEGE Degrees and you know all those people that go into the military and get DEGREES. my husband is one of the smartest men and he is in the military. People join the military for many reasons last of all being "too stupid" to make it in the real world, I bet that is like .00000000000001 percent of the military population. There are officers with masters, and doctorates, I am going into the military with a doctorate.
