When going on a diet what should a teenager watch? Calories, carbs or grams of fat? And what would be considered a low amount for it?

My best advice is to watch all of them at some level.
Here's the scoop: you gain weight and get fat when you take in more CALORIES than you burn. Foods that are high in FAT are also higher in calories. CARBS are only really an issue if they are refined carbs (i.e. white flour). So, the only time you should cut carbs is if you are cutting out "white foods" such as white bread, white pastas, white potatoes, and sugar. Carbs from vegetables and whole grains are very good for you, and they are part of brain health and development. So, if you go carb-cutting crazy, and you only eat meat and cheese, you'll eventually suffer from kidney problems and nerological side effects (memory/concentration problems, ets.). To keep a healthy weight, cut the junk you know you shouldn't eat, and move more. That's really the best advice anyone can give. It is more about lifestyle than dieting or focusing on fat/calories/carbs. If you have a weight problem, Weight Watchers is an EXCELLENT program, and they teach you how to eat without sacrificing everything you love.
Good luck!

Calories, carbs & fats are certainly to be avoided if you want to lose weight, but there are some other things you ought to know.

Farmers give their livestock growth hormone to make them get big and fat. What do you think that hormone does to you when you eat the meat, milk, eggs etc. from those animals? Yup, it makes you get big and fat.

If you can buy organic meat, milk, cheese, eggs etc., it will help you get the pounds off more quickly.

Also, exercise helps kill an appetite, plus it burns calories.

Skinny people (I've observed . . . I'm not one yet) have a lifestyle that doesn't include a whole lot of eating.

Case in point my neice-in-law (if there is such a thing, my nephew's wife) went out to pizza with a group of us. When in a pizza joint, I'm going to enjoy the pizza! THAT'S THE POINT !!! Right? Not for her. She ordered a salad!

That's the skinny lifestyle. If you can live skinny, you can be skinny. I haven't reached that state of nirvanah yet. Don't know that I care to.

Good luck with your goal.

~~~I think it is a combination of all.......Just try to eat healthy all the way arounds. Also,,,try not to get caught up in the "super size" of food. It seems like where ever we go,,,the food is so "big". An actual serving size is one half cup. For example,,,each meal should consist of a protein, fruit or vegt (fiber) and a low glycimic carb. and just remember a serving is 1/2 cup. You will be amazed at how much you can eat and still loose weight. Also drinking at least 8 8oz of water a day really does help.......
