even if that power is not a God in the common sense of the word?

Or is everything really as pointless and horrible as I think it is?

Everything is exactly as it is. Beyond natural principles, there is nothing. This is neither a higher nor lower power, just existence itself.

I don't believe there is a higher power in charge of things... but that doesn't mean everything is pointless and horrible. Create your own purpose and meaning for life.

I wish people that like to throw around this term "atheist" would tell us what they mean by it. Do you mean someone who does not believe that bible stories are literally true . . . who does not believe that God ever made a donkey talk or stop the Sun in the sky so some human beings would have more light to kill other human beings?

A lot of fundamentalist Christians call anyone an atheist who does not believe that bible stories are literally true, no matter how deeply religious and reverent this person might be.

I wish people would tell us what they mean when they direct questions to atheists, so people would know whether or not they should answer the question.

I don't believe that there is a higher power, nor do I believe that everything is pointless or horrible. Life is good. Enjoy!

there is Ra ,Isis ,and Gaia .all higher powers with out them we would not exist
and these powers are higher than Jehova the Liar ,who was not even a God but an Anunaki although he did create the Adam race but for his own devious motives as slaves to mine gold for him

his descendents the illuminati to this day try to control a large part of Humanity through organized religion ,manipulating the believers with mind control and the financial systems.their motives are ego istic
better place your bets on Gaia and Ra at least their motives are to promote life ,not to terminate it

Do I believe there is higher power? Nope.

Does that make things terrible and pointless? Nope.

No...that would be a deity type belief...I am an atheist... I believe the universe itself is the best you can get and not a higher power, just a state of existence or whatnot.

i wouldn't say "in charge" but there's got to be something more powerful than humans.
how horrible do you think it is?

i bet when you're old looking back on life you'll kick yourself in the A%@ for not appreciating life alittle more. who cares what the point is. just try to have fun and stop trying to find a greater meaning.

Then they wouldn't be atheists; that is more of an agnostic view.

Agnostic: a person who believes that nothing is known or can be known of the existence or nature of God or of anything beyond material phenomena; a person who claims neither faith nor disbelief in God.
