I know about the new fed law that requires the free release of prescriptions from all eye exams, but does it also mean that you do not need to purchase contacts with an eye exam?
or can a store require you to purchase contact lenses with an exam?

Awww.... I went and saw my local store, and I remember a few years ago, they were very picky about not giving the exam and contacts seperately, so this time I just went with it and paid for the exam and contacts. They haven't placed the order for the lenses yet because I'm still on trial. But I'm looking on the receipt and it says "no refunds". So I don't know if I should go back and ask for a refund on the unordered contacts, or just leave it alone. I could save $30-40 by ordering the lenses online. I feel frustrated. I should have asked them beforehand or just went to walmart, although its far away and Id need to borrow someone's car. Oh well.

No. You don't have to buy contacts along with an eye exam.
Now, the examiner may have a clause that the eye exam will be free IF you need and buy contacts. What you need to do is read the "fine print".

If you went down for an eye exam, paid for it, I see no reason to worry about having to buy contacts. Pops
