Why ask travellers...I am a Trinidad and Tobago citizen. The country is a very nice place to visit.
It is one of the most multi-racial countries in the world without any major problems. The major population is of African and East Indian origin. Other ethnic groups there are europeans, caucasions, chinese, spanish, just about every race you can find there. The religions are mainly Roman Catholic, Hindus, Muslims, pentecontals, anglicans and other christians etc.
People in trinidad call ourselves are Trinis (Trin-nees) and Tobago called tobagonians (tub-bay-go-nee-ans) or sometimes we just say Trinbagonians.
With all these different peoples the food is just as different and great tastes with some having a lot of "hottness" or spicy as they say in America.
The 2 islands are seperate but run by the same government. Trinidad is more of the busy, business type location which has many industries and oil. It also has a lot of great scenery like Mount Saint Benedit, and the most popular beach is to the north called Maracas Bay, which is fun to get too because you literally have to drive through the mountain ranges.Trinidad also has a popular yatch club at a beach called Caranage, if you into boating.
The largest asphalt lake in the world(the black stuff used to make roads) is also located in Trinidad and we also have a few mud volcanoes, which is really interesting.
Tobago is the smaller island of the 2. To get there you can take a ferry which is cheap and has a great view( a 4 hour trip) or go the quick way 10 minutes by plane. Tobago is more laid back with it's biggest city called Scarbrough. The main ethnic group in Tobago is of African origin. There you can visit the coral reef, go scuba diving, ride on glass bottom boats etc. The beaches there are awesome...bluer than a swimming pool. Main spots there would be Store Bay, Pigeon Point and Bucco Reef. It also has a lot of traditional african celebrations not done in Trinidad. People there are very friendly.
Music- We invented the "steel pan" which america calls the "steel drum". Local music is called Calypso (Kal-lip-so) and Soca (So-cah). We also listen to a lot of reggae, rock'n'roll, R&B, hip-hop and so so on. Also a lot of traditional East indian music and african drums.
As for critics who talk about our crime. Fact is we are no better off than any other country.America has some of the most hideous crimes in the world. Every place has its good and bad.
Just get a good tour guide and you'll be ok.Most crimes are drug related, but still don't go there all flashy, showing off your gold and jewlery to everyone. That will make you a target no matter where you go.
Places to avoid should be Laventille in the north and Embacakdere in the South and I HIGHLY doubth your tour guide would take you there.
Seasons. As for when is the best time to go. Jan to June is mainly hot and dry. Jun to Dec is wet and rainy. The Carnival celebrations (5 days of continuous partying) 2nd largest in the world to Brazil, usually takes place in Feb or early March. Has already gone a couple weeks ago.
If you are American the currency rate is about 1US to 6TT(trinidad and togabo) dollars which make your life a lot easier.
I simply can't put all the info into the one message but you get my drift.
Local new papers are at www.guardian.com
and www.trinidadexpress.com
I won't believe all i read in the papers though.
