I am trying to find out about famous artists or other creative people that have suffered from mental disorders. I have to do a presentation for my abnormal Psychology class, and I am not having very much luck. Thank you for your help, to anyone that can either list names or provide me with a website.

Well, it doesn't have to be any particular mental disorder, just any at all. I am trying to disprove the myth the creative people are crazy.

I think the better question is which haven't had some issues. Many 'artists' are tormented with varietal issues...many self-medicate with all kinds of stuff (heroin ODs, etc.).
Try looking up Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Sarah Vaughn, Lennie Bruce...you could likely rack up a list. William S Burroughs, etc...

It seems for some reason that the higher the intelligence, the higher the likelihood of mental disease. My personal favorite poet is William Blake. His works, both the poetry and his drawings and woodcuts, are superb. However, he also claimed he could see angels. He also claimed that his poetry was dictated directly from God, although if you look at his notes, he didn't seem to have any difficulty editing what God had to say.

If you could be more specific about the mental illness, it would be helpful in answering the question accurately. That being said, About.com has an alphabetical listing, with blurbs of information, of celebrities who are bipolar.

I could name a million people. Einstein, Baetovent, Picasso ( you know you are crazy when you chop off your own ear and give it to a prostitute!) almost every great thinker and artist alive! i suggest Baetoven, he may of played classical music, but he acted like a maniac.

Van Gogh was pretty imbalanced. He suffered from horrible depression. He even cut off his own ear and sent it to a girl in a basket cause she said she'd love him if he did it.
