well, i dunno about 'smarted' as a singular event but there's 'being out-smarted' which implies/means someone who has just got something before you. then there's something 'smarting' which means it hurts or someone hurting. this might be a thing where someone used a word meant solely for themselves without any one singular meaning. americans/english people do this often. the meaning is not meant for anyone other than themselves or a select few.

It can be used to mean slightly hurt. Like, "ow, that smarted me", as in "ow, that pinched really hard"
