You need to be a citizen or legal permanent resident of the United States. You must be at least 18 years old to join, 17 if your parent or guardian signs the paperwork.
You have to have a high school diploma. There are ways to enlist if you only have a GED, however, there are additional requirements for joining on just a GED, and the Army only takes 2% of people with GEDs out of the overall number of people they enlist each recruiting year.
You have to meet height / weight requirements. That means you need to be above a minimum weight for your height, but below the maximum allowed weight, as set forth by the Army. You also must be in good health and able to pass a physical exam.
There are many things that can disqualify you from service, such as ever having been diagnosed with or treated for asthma, ADD, ADHD, or depression. Many medical conditions such as broken bones that you may have had in your past require a waiver. Most legal problems in your past either require a waiver or can disqualify you.

Honestly, you don't have to score very high on the ASVAB at all to join the army.
If you want to go infantry, make sure you get below a 60. If you want all options open, study up and get a 95 and above.
The recruiter will try to screw you with a crappy job to fill his quota so don't trust him. He will lie to you. As long as you get a really high asvab score, you will have more to negotiate with. And, if he doesn't offer you what you want, you are not obligated to anything if you haven't signed that large packet.
