How do I become a bartender?

I'm a student and I'm currently a barista, but I'm interested in seeing if I could become a bartender. I'm in northern California. I'm a college student, so I do not have very much money. Thanks for the help!

It's true, I learned because a small restaurant (that I later owned) hired me as a bartender and trained me for free. However, I didn't make great tips because liquor wasn't the focal point of the restaurant. A friend of mine went to bartending school and worked at very upscale events and made a ton. Another friend was trained at Applebees and had to be able to reel off 1000 different drink recipes in her test.

I'd say try to start at a small place, and read up on drinks as much as you can in your spare time.

Every good bartender is good at other positions first. Try getting a job and working your way up. Bartender school is a waste of time. You just have to get experience. You have to be good under pressure. You will have to earn the trust of whoever you work for. There is a lot of responsibility.

most bartenders go to bartenders school or start out as a bartender at a smaller bar first before moving up. Learn to make drinks read recipes, try them out at home?

Some community colleges offer bartending classes. That way you can learn essential skills and save money at the same time.

Quit college and go to bartending school. Playing nursemate to a bunch of pathetic alcoholics gets to be sickening. Like watching people have sex and not have any yourself.
