no need for water to go in the crock itself. If what you are cooking requires water you put it in with the food. Good luck,, crock pots are great and you might want to try the crock pot classics that are in the grocers freezer cause those are great as well... Good luck

Andrew, that sounds more like a steamer than a crock pot- I have both a steamer and a pressure cooker that have two different levels. You put water in the bottom of the main pot and then you put the vegetables and food in the container that goes above the water in the pressure cooker or steam pot and put a lid on top of it. As the water boils, it raises through the pours in the second container which steam cooks the vegetables. From what I have seen is that a traditional crock pot is something like what is called a Dutch Oven (not farting in bed) which is made of a clay like substance that you stick in the oven to slowly roast a stew, pot roast , or similar type of food over a long period of time while the flavours all blend into each other (but maybe your crock pot is a double purpose pot like my pressure cooker and steamer that can be used for both too).

You do not put water in the 'container' thing. You put the inside container in the part that heats up. I usually spray the inside container with some pam (so it doesn't stick). Typically I brown any meat to sear it (in a separate pan) - only a couple of minutes). Then I just stick everything in the crockpot (no water in the inside container - unless you're making stew or you want lots of juice). You will normally get juice out of want you're cooking. If you want BBQ sauce, like for ribs - I usually put that in at the end - (about 1/2 before eating or so).

Whether it's beans or brisket, I put those in first, the main part of the meal, toss the water/broth in, and while it's heating up, the veggies and spices and then slap the lid on it. I haven't had any problems doing it this way.

2 containers.....the one that comes out...you put the water in that one. I always put a ton of water in with whatever I am cooking and it is fine.
