Cats' nails may be clipped, but you must be very careful. There is a nerve and a blood vessel that runs through the nail. You have to look at the nails to see where they end. You may clip the nail beyond the point where the blood vessel and nerves end. If you don't know what you are looking for, you must look at pictures/diagrams of a housecat's nails before attempting to clip them. If you clip too much off the nail, the nail will bleed and the cat will be in pain. The link below has an article on clipping and a small diagram.

And, declawing is cruel and unnatural.

If the cat is an inside cat you can clip his/her claws. No if she goes outside as she needs her claws for protection. You calmly hold the cat on your lap and just clip off the tips of the nail.
Every week you can do this until the cats nails are the right size. You see, when you clip a little every week the nerve will actually go further back, so you won't hurt the animal. Don't worry about making the cat sick or killing her by clipping her nails. Even if you make her bleed a little she'll be alright.

I would not clip the nails of an outdoor cat. These are their main method of defense and dull nails won't do them any good. Besides, an outdoor cat will tend to keep their nails short just by means of their walking on hard surfaces and scratching on trees, etc.

On the other hand, it is almost imperative that you clip the nails of a house cat because they are not "worn down" by outside exposure. Trim only the front paws, never the rear. Your cat won't like the experience much (after awhile, they'll begin to "accept" the intrusion) but place the cat in your lap on his/her back. Gently squeeze the paw between the thumb and forefinger of your left hand. This will cause the claws to protrude. (Your cat will probably be hissing up a storm at this point) Using regular human fingernail clippers, clip JUST THE POINT of each individual claw. DO NOT clip any deeper.

If you have any doubt, I would go to your neighborhood pet supply store and they should be more than happy to explain the procedure.

A cat will not get sick or die if you clip a nail. People buy scratching posts and a cat uses that and it keeps the nails short. Some cats will not use it and that is why you have to clip the nails.

Not if you're careful and you only clip the ends - if you get too close to where the nail is still growing, the cat will let you know about it!

Clip the nails often, once every week or two, and the cat should get used to it. Besides saving your friends' skin, clipping will keep nails from getting ingrown, which is bad for the kitty (and you, when you have pay a vet to fix it).

Clipping a cat's claws can be tricky. If you clip the nail beyond the clear part, it will bleed. I did some research about whether or not a cat can sick or die from nail clipping and have not found a definite answer.

You might want to take your cat to a vet for her nails to be clipped and request the vet show you the proper ways to do it.

There is an alternative called soft claws. I read about alternatives to declawing which I have never believed in. Before I got my cats, I read books about caring for them. In the course of my research, I read about nail covers, then did some Internet research.

I highly recommend a book which is in the source list. I am including the URL for soft nails.

It is safe to trim a cats claws. The cat won't get sick or die. It will be fine. Just make sure you don't clip to deep. When I trim my cats claws I only clip the tips of them. If you do it to deep you will cut into the quick (probably not spelled right) and the cat will bleed. If this happens you will have to take it to the vet. So to be on the safe side just trim the tips.

You can trim cat claws just like your own fingernails.

Note that there's a bit of flesh that extends into the claw. Don't clip that far back. It will bleed an the cat will get very mad.

f you clip a cat's nails on a regular basis, they get used to it and don't mind at all.

Trimming a cat's claws is very like trimming a baby's nails - you must NOT cut too close to the quick (the flesh part of the nail). You need to have a professional or a vet or someone who knows a lot about cats to show you how to trim a cat's nails. It is not easy becuase the cat will fight you if you don't know how and if you accidently cut too close to the quick, he'll yowl in pain and you would have injured your cat. So if you haven't got a clue as to how to do it PLEASE don't attempt it yourself. Instead, take kitty to the vet and let them trim his claws. You can watch and ask questions so that next time, you'll be able to do it yourself.

you can clip your cat's nails with regular nail clippers or you can get pet clippers at any pet store, target etc. you will probably want to get something that will stop the bleeding in case you cut too close to the quick. someone at the pet store can point out a few products for you, i think one of them is called "quick stop". if you have any concerns on what the quick looks like your vet or pet groomers can show you the first time then you should be fine. good luck.
