Doesn't matter if door is shut or open, doesn't matter iif key is in or not in the ignition. The problem is inconsistant. Any ideas? The car only has 50,000 miles and is well taken care of.

Does the radio go off after a hour and does the door ajar light stay on the dash board while you drive?

Ford has a feature to leave the radio on in some cars till the door is opened on drivers side... meanign the door ajar switch on drivers door is stuck and needing replacement (the dome light should stay on also)

if not some Ford's had an issue with the transmission range sensor (the sensor that tells the computer what gear it's in) has sometimes caused this issue but the radio stays on usually till the car's battery goes dead. Also I've seen one or two radios actually short out internally and stay on till it kills the battery also.

basically, does the radio stay off when you get in and all until you start it.. then won't go off until an hour after the key is off and you have exited the vehicle?
If yes.. look at that door ajar switch

The problem could be the lock cylinder or the actual ignition switch. But if the key operates normally and feels normal... it may be the accessory relay sticking. You can try swapping it with..say..the blower relay..if the fan stays on at times and not the radio...bingo! The locations of the relays should be in owners manual in fuse box description/maintenance section.

If I'm not mistaking, the radio will stay on until the door is opened normally right? Does the dome light come on when you open the door? Check that. If not, the the switch in the door is sticking.

You might want to try a new radio or pull the fuse for the radio until you can get a new one so you don't kill your battery. Keep in mind when you pull the fuse you'll be able to plug it back in to use the radio but your programmed stations won't be set anymore!

would properly be your ignition replace, or an ignition module, or probable a crank, or cam position sensor. Or one worse case would properly be the extremely workstation itself. Have the research engine right now straight forward on? ought to bypass with to get that checked.
