Sounds like you mis-predicted the weather. Next time have your son wear layers or at least bring along warmer clothes that he can change into if the temp. drops. These days, kids think it's cool to dress like summer when it's freezing outside!

The only thing wrong is the "no socks" part. How can you let him play basketball with no socks?

Who cares about the shorts? It was 58 degrees out. He's not going to get frostbite. You don't get sick from wearing shorts in 50 degree weather.
BTW, that must have been one LOOOOOOONG basketball game if the temp dropped 14 degrees.

Was your kid complaining? I don't know why you would worry over this but the only way you would be wrong is if your child was begging to wear warm clothes and you refused to allow it.

My son plays basket ball he is 8 he chooses not to wear pants over his shorts all the time we live in Michigan so we have temps of like 25 and lower.

I always tell him that he needs to wear pants but he doesn't want to bother with it so what I do is keep a pair in the car in case some thing was to happen and make sure the car is warmed up for when he gets in the car.

No matter what it's doing out there, bear in mind that it's still winter. In some places, there's frost until mid-May. The weather is very unpredicatble. It's warm when the sun is out, but once it slides down behind the horizon, temperatures can drop by as much 20 or 30 degrees. Dress for the seasons.

I'm only 18 years old, but I remember hearing of the "good old days" when many kids survived swallowing lead-filled paint, electrocuting themselves from uncovered wiring and raw sockets, and propelling their bodies at high speeds across the earth without seat belts in those things called "cars"...and they turned out just fine. I'm pretty sure that 44 degree weather isn't going to cripple your sweaty basketball player. Remember that a good portion of the world's population consistently lives in sub-zero temperatures year-round (northern Russia, parts of Canada and Alaska, etc.) and live to tell the tale everyday. Don't worry the poor kid ;-)

Don't sweat the small stuff. It is no big deal. Don't worry about it. If your son was refusing to wear a jacket and long pants, it was not worth the argument to get him to change. Save the arguments for serious issues.
And don't let anyone (especially your spouse) tell you that you were a bad mom because of this.

No you are not wrong. IF he was playing basketball wearing shorts that's fine. And if he wears his sneakers with no socks, that is fine to. I see people here with shorts and sneakers with no socks and at times it is below 0'F I wouldn't worry about it. If his basketball instructor tells you he must wear socks. Tell him/her that he refuses to wear them. My opinion is if he is comfortable not wearing socks that's fine. I hardly wear socks myself.

Hey, my two sons used to walk to school in mid-winter (in upstate NY!!!) with T-shirts and light pants. They never got sick - and I never stopped them. Kids burn differently than we do as adults. Socks would be a good idea because feet sweat and socks can absorb..... other than that - as long as they're not getting sick - what's the difference.

well water under the bridge, the only thing i would say is insist on sox with sneakers even in the summer, i have four sons, trust me, it's not good for their feet and the odor will be unbearable, unless my children are wearing sandals they know they have to have sox on, and as wrong as it may be , to be honest i do judge when i see a child without sox i find myself thinking shame on that mom

I wouldn't worry too much about it, I've seen kids during the winter not wearing any coats, just becasue they choose not too, ranging the from ages 12-18.
