you know, when you got some balloons in your hand you accidentally let one fly off.
but how far do they go, can they hit the clouds or possibly higher?

All depends on air pressure, air traffic, wind conditions, and in some cases, icing. A balloon launched by the Mythbusters was announced to have gone about 300 miles.

They go up until the air is too thin to be heavier than the helium in the baloon or if the baloon looses too much helium before it bets there. Also since the air is thinner this effects the volume of the helium in the baloon as it goes higher..

I put a mouse in one one time and it went all the way to australia .I put a note in with it and they called me three day's later . Now thats a long way's .

They fly to about 2000' and then deflate and land in the nearest ocean where they are immediately swallowed by a dolphin or pelican who then dies and it is your fault. Or so I have been told about a million times.
