I'm a nurse. No the side effects are brutal on young children. Herbal medication is best with no side effects. One of the side effects is suicidal. Please rethink before you give it. Take care and all the best.

Personally, i wouldnt want a child to take antidepressants unless they had Severe issues that couldnt be worked through without them. I do know that a number of children do take a multitude of medications, but when you think about it would you really want a child to become dependent on a medication at an early age if they dont Truly need it?
Again- this is my personal opinion, but i think it is necessary for children to try to learn to cope with things as much as possible without the outside influence of medication. If they really need them in the future then let them decide upon that or take control of it if they cannot handle their problems at all, even when talking to a counselor or anything of that sort.

Personally, I think we have become so 'medicine happy' in this country. It's OK for kids to get depressed once in a while, or hyperactive. A reason is because kids don't exercise anymore. I think the best thing is to get the child involved in something he/she likes and can succeed at - or visit some old people in a home. They're not exposed to any real life situations.

My son came home in 7th grade and said he was "voted the most depressed kid in his class". I said "hey, have you got food on the table?, clothes to wear?, a bed to sleep in? - Take a deep breath because this is as good as it gets!!!!".......

You have to remind these kids that there are kids that sleep on the floor, have no parents, no food to eat and in some cases, in war - have lost their parents, family, siblings and are utterly alone. Maybe him seeing some of these things will make him appreciate his life.

Of couse, there ARE times that kids really do need medical intervention - but we are totally overkill in overmedicating everyone..... Most of the time, if people got off of everything - they do a lot better.

It depends on the age of the child, and if they say they WANT to start taking AD's in the first place...

If your child is just going through puberty, it's very natural for their hormones to make them go a little nutzo. I did when I was in the 7th grade, actually. I started cutting my wrists and crying all the time, and I even refused to go to school on some days. Eventually it worked itself out of my system and I just got over it. The fluctuation in hormone levels during puberty messes with a kid's head. And, not to mention, Middle School is one of the toughest places to feel accepted, ever.

If your child is not going through puberty, I would suggest taking them to a therapist. If the therapist thinks the child needs to begin taking medication, then yes. Just ask yourself if you're willing to put the child through hell taking medication every single day.

It can make a big difference in the age of the child. I would recommend seeking professional help. If the child is just going through puberty, I would give it a little while. If the kid doesn't seem to improve, I would take her/him to a doctor.

Hope this helps!
