Dogs can get hairballs, but really what you need to do is take the dog to a vet and get it examined and diagnosed. Coughing and vomiting could be symptoms of a variety of things.

You should take him to the vet and have him checked. It's definitely not hairballs--cats get those, not dogs. Also, your mom should know that Distemper is a serious and life threatening disease.
If he continues vomiting, he needs to go to an emergency center ASAP. Especially if he is unable to have a bowel movement. They may need to take x-rays or do bloodwork on him to see what the problem is.

How old is the dog ? Is he eating and drinking ? If he's not eating or drinking it could be parvo. Could also be heart worms, you never know. But coughing and vomiting could be symptoms of a number of things. I'm not a vet but with a little more info, I might would have a better idea. But as I'm sure everyone who answers this question will say, it would be best to bring him to a vet. Good Luck.

Although it isn't likely to be hairballs, he could have something else in his stomach. Dogs are notorious for eating weird objects--I've seen everything from carpet to pennies to a bellyful of candy wrappers. He may have something stuck in his throat, or he could have a foreign object in his stomach or small intestine.
Is he eating and drinking? If not, you definitely need to take him to the veterinarian for radiographs (x-rays) so the doctor can see if there is anything unusual in his digestive tract.
Even if he is eating and drinking, keep a close eye on him. Although many dogs vomit occasionally, continued vomiting means that something is wrong.

It's possible that they could get a little fur ball some times. They do groom themselves, but not as much as cats do. If you have a small dog you could try adding about a teaspoon of cooking oil or olive oil mixed in with his food. Or, you could try about a teaspoon of soft butter or margarine. Dogs love butter or margarine and will lick it right from the spoon. If you dog is bigger tho, you could give him a tablespoon of oil or margarine. If his problems persist then I would recommend that you call your vet. Hope this helps!

It could be digestive problems, or kennel cough You should take your dog to the vet to be checked out. Make sure that he is still drinking his water as well you don't want him to dehydrate.
good luck with your doggie!!
