I'm getting a 1980 Nissan Pathfinder with approx 229,000 miles. No big problems noted. How long can I expect the engine to "live"? I know the current owners (family). They have well maintained the vehicle and cared well for it. I just want to know what to expect. Thanks!

Their always comes a time when it cost more to keep it running than its worth. If this is an automatic check the trans fluid. It should be pink. blood red or brown is no good. If this is a V-6 model I wouldn't touch it. If it is a 4- cylinder, I had a Nissan hard body truck that made it to 500,000. It wasn't exactly a vehicle that I pick up a date in,but? 229,000 over twenty seven years is hard on a car. You can expect to spend 200 dollars a month on average to keep it running. Some months you may spend nothing others you may have to replace a transmission. I would sell it if I were you. Buy a newer car, It sounds like your asking how long you can depend on this car and the truth is you can't.

Well I have worked on many Pathfinders with high mileage and some with more than 300,000miles. What I have to worry about is the front suspension, steering parts, brake calipers, brake rubber hoses, ball joints and the drive shafts and axles. Cars that old should be restored to drive right. Then after spending big money on the above wait for the transmission or motor to fail at the worst moment. The brand new 4.0 liter 265 hp Pathfinder seats 7 and gets better gas milage, has warranty and air bags to protect occupants in a wreck.

229,000 miles on a twenty year old car? That's a well taken care of car with very little miles. Most Nissan engines are well made, but from that year, the engines are different. It will usually last roughly 5-7 years, but since you have noted no big problems, you might have that car until 2010.

Well since no one really answered this question Nissan trucks can make it well past 300,000 or even 500,000. My 1987 d21 has 250,000. A well maintained engine can run a very long time. Some vehicle just won't die. If it runs great don't worry so much about mileage. You could buy a vehicle that shows less miles but has a million because they unplugged the speedometer.

This is more of a question of yourself. If you can drive as the current owners drive and maintain the Pathfinder in the same way. Yes I think it would be a good buy. But here's the catch. Most people have there own way of driving and taking care of what they own. Even in a family, everyone drives different and wares out the vehicle different. You'll be ahead of yourself if you allow for major repairs, if they are needed. In any case good luck, T-Bear

The mileage isn't a big issue. The secret is in the maintenance/up keep of the engine. As you said the previous owner maintained it well. My suggestion would be to ask the previous owner on his technique/program he has on maintaining his vehicles. He most likely has an outstanding maintenance schedule for his vehicles.

i know nissan engines can last for a long time 200,000 miles could be nothing, it depends on how good the engine its been well taken care, if the engine is now good and you keep it in good care it may go for another five years or so.
