Not much. I know that it is a Dravidian language of southern India closely related to Telegu spoken around Hyderbad. I know also that most of the Indian merchants who traveled to Southeast Asia and Indonesia starting around 400 A.D., bringing both Hinduism and Islam with them, were Tamil speakers and that there is still a Tamil speaking minority in Singapore. There are also numerous Tamil loan words in the Malayan language along with Sanskrit, Arabic and English loan words.
