Where an individual has been under sustained stress for a long period of time, has suffered serious life crises, or has reached a stage of exhaustion and demoralisation, then breakdown may occur.
This may show itself physically as a heart attack, angina or a stroke, or may show as 'nervous' or 'mental' breakdown, where the sufferer becomes mentally ill. In the latter case symptoms may not be seen by the individual, but may be obvious to partners, friends and colleagues.
'Breakdown' sounds sudden and dramatic - in the case of physical breakdown it may be. Mental breakdown, however, may be slow in onset, and may be mild or severe. The boundary between prolonged unhappiness or exhaustion and breakdown is blurred - one definition of breakdown may be that the sufferer finally carries out some act that makes it impossible to continue functioning normally in society.
Symptoms of nervous breakdown may be:
1. uncharacteristic, uncontrollable, irrational behaviour
2. intense and excessive anxiety
3. severe depression
4. obsessive activity - persistent performance of an irrational activity, or of a normal activity to an irrational degree
5. manic depression - depression interspersed with periods of euphoria
6. destructive and self-destructive behaviour:
7. sobbing
8. screaming
9. shouting
10. violence
11. self-mutilation
12. suicide
13. doing stupid things:
giving up a good job
breaking up good relationships
shoplifting
14. becoming dependent on drugs
15. schizophrenia
Where breakdown appears to be underway, seek professional help immediately.

The symptoms of a mental breakdown are when you are fixated with something that is troubling you.
You are unable to think rationally, and your thoughts are usually on one track only, without being able to solve the situation, real or otherwise.
According to the individual,a person can become withdrawn, anti social, doing things out of the ordinary, overdrawing on the credit card, indulging in unusual sexual practises, erratic eating,
sabotaging their own efforts, working long hours to avoid relationships. bullying co-workers.
While these symptoms may be construed as a personality disorder, they are the symptoms of a mental breakdown, especially if they are a recent or building up occurrence.
Some people can work through these symptoms without assistance from friends or medical people, however many will need professional assistance and back-up support people that are trained in remedying mental illness.

Excessive crying, insomnia, fear, loss of cognitive skills in varying degrees, isolation, no desire to be around anyone. I had a breakdown 5 years ago. I lost the ability to even drive a car. I couldn't even pay attention enough to watch the road. I have come a long way, but I still have depression. It changed my personality completely. I used to be very talkative, but I'm quiet now. It is a living hell.

I'm a nurse. A person can have many symptoms like insomnia, weight loss or gain, crying, unexplained anger, something like that. I would talk to the doctor about this to get some medication to ease your stress and pain. Hang in there thing will get better. Take care and all the best.

Mostly inability to function. A panic attack is often what people consider a "breakdown", i.e.- heart palpitations, trouble breathing (hyperventilating), feeling like you're going to die (heart attack). You could also have a "breakdown" if you were so depressed that you couldn't move. Sounds like maybe you need to talk to a counselor.
