1) What is it?
Aromatherapy is a form of therapy that utilizes our sense of smell. It is very ancient and started with a medical doctor in the middle ages called Avicenna (considered to be one of the fathers of organized medicine).
2)How it works?
The body cells that sense the different smells take their input from small molecules of the aromatic substance and send a signal directly into the brain. It does not need to go via digestive system, like everything else that you ingest by mouth. That is one of the reasons it is very effective and fast acting.
3)What is it supposed to be helping?
There is no well established scientific evidence for the efficacy of the different smells, but there is a huge body of popular wisdom around the subject.
4)Who does it and how?
It is mostly done in Spas and in Holistic Medicine practices, by having different aromas either present in the air by aerosols, evaporators or by burning a candle with the desired aroma.
5) Does it help relaxation?
The most popular of all aromas is that of Lavender, said to help with depression, and to relax. You will only know if you try, because different smells act differently in different people.
There are no hard fast rules here.

Aromatherapy is based on the theory that bodily functions can be controlled through certian aromas. Take lavendar for example. Many theorize that lavendar causes the mind to slow down, resulting in a deep relaxation.
There are a lot of different scents that can help with many different things. Women have used lavendar to ease morning sickness, or general sickness caused by pregnancy.
Many people do it in the form of scented lotions, candles or insence, or burning the actual plant.
