Cats are very smart. At first your kitty may not know the cat in the mirror is her if she is by herself but with you holding her she will figure it out.

Of course-animals who do not recognize their own reflection like bird(that depends on intelligence & that is determined by size of the brain) and will challenge the other bird in the miror why you'll see birds attacking their rflections. Were your cat not to know that its her in the mirror she too would be attacking the cat in the mirror for cts are territorial and would never tolerate this nervy strange cat in their house and would certainly shy away from Your reflection for would be a stranger.

I don't see why not. When my cats were kittens, I used to have one of those cheap "door mirrors" you get at Wal Mart or such, and I would lean it sideways against the couch with the long edge on the floor so the kittens could see into it. They loved to play with their reflections and hide behind the mirror, between it and the couch, then jump out and pounce at their reflections like it was another cat.

My cat never got past swatting and hissing at his reflection.

He used to swat at animals he saw on TV. And every day, he'd run down stairs, turn the corner at the bottom quickly, and then WHAM! Head first into the leg of the coffee table. He'd drink from the toilet in the dark early morning. If someone came into the bathroom and switched on the light.... plop! Right into the toilet bowl.

I guess I had a stupid cat.

According to several studies, elephants and humans are among the few mammals that can recognize themselves in the mirror.

The reason why someone's cat might not mind itself in the mirror is probably because it has no scent.

when my cat was a kitten and she saw herself in the mirror, she would swat and play. now that she's older, she completly ignores it. I don't know if she figured it out, or just doesn't care!
