Hi,
I agree with the advice to adopt a cat from a shelter. I have two "shelter" female cats. They were both horribly abused by inhuman beings. The one lost an eye. Although vets worked to save the other's tail, she lost it because she pulled the stitches out. She also had other health problems that were treated and healed. They were spayed by the shelter. Along with the adoption papers, I also got papers about their health history. Fortunately, this is a no kill shelter.
I also have a male cat I got from a friend of a friend and he is very healthy. He was neutered. This was required before I could adopt my other cats. The shelter provided the procedure.
Shelters ask for a donation when a person adopts a pet. At the time I adopted my cats, there was a two for the price of one offer. The neutering was done at no cost. I donated more than the adoption request. At the time, I had the money and, when I think of the joys my cats have brought into my life, well, I wish I had had more to give.
Have you said anything to Petco? Was the cat already sick when you bought him?
Unfortunately, there are puppy mills and I am sure that there are also kitten mills. I have seen TV documentaries about the puppy mills and have read about them in the papers.
I have to wonder what stores to do animals whom are not bought....
The bottom line is that shelters are run and staffed by animal lovers, although there may be exceptions. I am not so sure about retailers.
I wish you and your new kitten the best, as well as the one who was sick where ever he is. I hope he was cured.

It makes me wonder how a sick kitten got into Petco.
You would probably want to look at the local SPCA or Humane society. If all else fails, check the papers- though there is no guarantee there.

The shelter is a good bet.
In our town, there's a column in the evening paper. You can get an animal for free if someone has some for give-away. That is most likely a good bet, too. Someone's home most likely would not have the germs a pet shop sometimes has.

RESCUE SHELTERS or other organizations of that kind like the HUMANE SOCIETY for example are great places to adopt kittens or any animals because of the large over population in stray animals if they do not find a home in a short amount of time then they are put to sleep/killed... so i would recomend rescue shelters rather than a breeder or a pet shop cuz they just profit from it rescue shelters are non-profit organizations.....
GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!

I always adopt my pets from the SPCA, the Humane Society, or from city shelters. They always have a ready supply of kittens, they usually spay/neuter them, set them up with their first vaccines, and sometimes even microchip them.

stick with a pound, or a cat home. its better to house unwanted, or found cats, otherwise they are put down.
