Encephalitis (brain information) can be due to a variety of causes. Usually it is caused by a viral infection. It may also be caused by a bacterial infection. The virus or bacteria may be contagious, but may not necessarily evoke encephalitis in another infected individual. Yeast or fungal infection is another cause.

Certain parasitic infections may cause encephalitis.

The swelling may also be due to an injury or form of poisoning, in which case it is obviously not contagious.
