That is not unusual, but I must admit that I have experienced it more when in urban areas than when in the country. Maybe it is the street lights that confuse them. I am not sure. Hope someone with a real answer addresses this issue. ok. I found the answer in the following site:

There are so many streetlights in the towns these days, birds are getting confused as to when night and day are - they simply go by how much light is around. For some birds, the hours of light tells them what season it is.

It is the start of the breeding season so they are trying to attract mates and warn off rivals.

You will not normally hear them singing in the dark in country regions but in places with street lights the light confuses them into waking earlier.

I think the lights confuse/bother them. I know with pet birds that can be the case, but you just throw a towel over their cage and they'll shut up. Thats not so easy to do for wild birds, I'd say!

I heard a bird singing as I left midnight mass last year on christmas morning. About 1 am and very cold. You would think they would be well cosied up in their nests at that time.

The birds ARE meant to be asleep. Dawn chorus used to be at 3.30am or 4am, but it seems to me that they're up all night now! You ARE right - they aren't owls, & it's not just you hearing them.

Because all the birds nr you know when you want to sleep and they all start singing simultaniously just to piss you off. Or could it be street lights....?

It's mating time. The early bird gets the hot other early bird, or something like that.
