What is the significance of "57"?
The Heinz 57 Varieties slogan is synonymous with the name "Heinz." Our corporate history tells us that in 1896, Henry John Heinz noticed an advertisement for "21 styles of shoes." He decided that his own products were not styles, but varieties. Although there were many more than 57 foods in production at the time, because the numbers "5" and "7" held a special significance for him and his wife, he adopted the slogan "57 Varieties." Thus, a new advertising campaign was launched for Heinz 57 Varieties — and the rest is history!

Heinz 57 is a shortened, popular form of the "57 Varieties" slogan of the H. J. Heinz Company. In its early days, the company wanted to advertise the great number of choices of canned and bottled foods it offered for sale, although the number 57 was chosen arbitrarily, as in fact by 1892 they had more than 60 products. The company now has more than 1,100 products.

No, Heinz 57 sauce just uses the number 57 that Heinz used for advertising purposes. When they started using Heinz 57, they actually had over 60 products. Go figure.

HEINZ 57 VARIETIES In 1860, Henry J. Heinz, age 16, was selling homegrown vegetables to Pittsburgh grocers. In 1869, he and a friend, L.C. Noble, went into business and marketed their 1st product-horseradish. The company went bankrupt, but Heinz started a new company in 1876, F. and J. Heinz. One of this firm's 1st products was ketchup. The inspiration for the "Heinz 57 Varieties" trademark came to Heinz one day as he rode an elevated train in New York City. He noticed an advertisement which promoted "21 styles" of a brand of shoes. He later said, "It set me to thinking. I said to myself, "We do not have styles of products, but we do have varieties of products.'" Although Heinz had well over 57 products, he liked the sound of that particular number, especially the 7 because of the "psychological influence of that figure and of its alluring significance to people of all ages."

57 was the varieties of tinned food they had and at the height
of there sales and popularity when a time for re-marketing was
called for they changed brand labeling hence "57" they have

I believe the original recipe had 57 different ingredients, or something like that. Check out the bottle, I think there's a little blurb printed on the label.
